Anna Maria Nabirye
Multidisciplinary Artist
Anna Maria Nabirye is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer and performer working across photography, visual arts, performance, documentary, theatre, screen, social practice and textiles. Her focus is on amplifying the stories of marginalised peoples with an emphasis on Black women in the diaspora - through celebration and joy.
Recent works & commissions include UP IN ARMS, a multimedia project created and conceived with Annie Saunders working through social practice, performance, film and publication, produced by Artsadmin, UK. The exhibition of this work was held at De La Warr Pavilion, UK (2023). Other iterations of the work include Under the Radar Symposium, USA (2020), International Women’s Film Festival, Dortmund, Germany (2019), VBKO Gallery, Vienna, Austria (2019), Social practice residencies at The Showroom, London (2018), MANA Contemporary, USA (2018) and No.w.here, UK.
Anna Maria is currently working on a new iteration of THE FUNNEST ROOM IN THE HOUSE, this work combines social practice, audio, installation and photography developed with Artsadmin, supported by Jerwood Foundation & Cement Fields, originally commissioned as an audio work by Whitstable Biennale in 2022, after her original installation was destroyed by fire. This current iteration is in collaboration with The Whitechapel Gallery, The Towner, The Albany & S.A.W.N (UK). The work takes inspiration from the kitchens of Nabirye’s childhood and those of the diaspora. Intimate spaces that were individual to each family’s life but were also a performance of collective culture, containing expressions of ancestral homelands and nostalgia for back-home mashed up with British culture.Her performance work spans theatre, film, television and artist moving image -Anna Maria was lead actor in mixed reality installation Last Time I saw Snow (Typeone, London Film Festival - nominated for Best Immersive Art & XR award 2022), other acting credits include The National Theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe, BBC1, BBC2 and Film4.Anna Maria has on-going collaborations with Mirza and Butler works have been shown at London Film Fest, Delfina Foundation, Mirror City-Hayward Gallery and commissioned by Film and video umbrella. Other social practice works include Motherhoody (The Albany) and award winning short film One Prick At A Time (King's College London) with Jess Mabel Jones. Nabirye co-founded and co-runs Afri-Co-Lab, a creative community dreaming space in East Sussex. Commissions and collaborations include Charleston Trust, The Royal Court, V&A, South Bank Centre, Brighton Museum, Guest Projects, Home Live Art and De La Warr Pavilion. As an educator and director, she has worked and created programmes and workshops for Yale School of Drama, Carnegie Mellon, National Theatre Institute, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, LAMDA, Half Moon YPT and London Philharmonic Orchestra's Junior Artists.Without Joy there can be no revolution.
